Mt. Ayaas
Mt. Ayaas is considered as one of the highest mountain in Rodriguez (formerly Montalban), Rizal. It has an elevation of 600+ ft. and described as a minor climb. It is located in the municipality of Brgy. Mascap in Rodriguez and a nearby community of Brgy. Wawa.

You have two option in terms of the trail, (1) the longer trail that features dusty flattened road, grassland, and glimpse view of Mt. Balagbag, Mt. Pamitinan, Mt. Binacayan,Mt. Hapunang Banoi and Mt. Parawagan. It is recommended for a day hike as early as 5AM for a good sunrise views. The second trail (2) is the shorter trail but with a difficult aspect. The hikers are protected by the forest. This route is steeper and more chances from encountering a wild snake. There is a water source in this trail where you can refill your bottled water and it’s definitely safe and taste like a purified water (I tried it).

How to get there: Ride a Van (UV Express) going to Rodriguez, Rizal in Farmers Cubao (beside Jollibee), terminal is operating 24 hours. Fare is Php 50.00 and the estimated travel time is around 1 ½ without traffic up to 2 hours. Tell the driver that you’re going to Brgy. Mascap, drop off at San Isidro. Then ride a tricycle going to Brgy Mascap, if ever you arrived as early as 3AM (just like in our case) you might also encounter some tricycle driver that will offer you a higher amount like Php 200.00 – Php 300.00. Luckily, there was a driver who offered us Php 150.00 for a ride (30.00x5 persons/FIXED) and additional 20 minutes travel time. Drop off at Brgy. Hall (Mascap), registration processing starts at exactly 4:30 AM. You can choose either referred guide or on the spot (rotation per day). You will pay Php 50.00 Environmental fee per person and Php 500.00 guide fee per group (Mt. Ayaas only). If you want to add Mt. Sipit Ulang in your trip, add Php 400.00 per group and additional Php 200.00 for a waterfall side trip.

Since we arrived as early as 3AM, we atarted our trek at exactly 5AM. Our Tour Guide (Christopher, 19 yrs old with his dog Bagat) chose the longer trail for us to witness the beautiful sunrise throughout the trail. The route we took was good for first timers since the trail is not that steep at first. The road is dusty especially when a tricycle passed by, but can still be managed. The views are definitely better than the traverse trail. You will encounter these tress with a lot of leapless twigs. It’s better if you arrived here as early as you can because this trail is exposed to sunlight, you might encounter the scorching heat of the sun.

Before you reach the summit, you will encounter the elevated slope mountain range. It was steep and a bit harder than expected. It’s a matter of 2 hours trekking so better to bring at least 1 liter of water for the rehydration of your body. It is also advisable to bring your own trail food because there’s no vendor in this trail (1). Use long sleeves and high socks for the protection of your skin from the irritating grass. And get ready for the wonderful views on summit.

Road To Summit
Introducing the summit of Mt. Ayaas. Once you arrived in the peak, you will be welcomed by the signage made by the following associations in-charged for the mountain’s protection and maintainance. This mountain is under the protection of AKFA Assn. (Ayaas Kayrufa Farmers Association), Brgy. Mascap Tourism Office, PBSP and PLDT.

AKFA Assn. did a great job in doing reforestation with the help and sponsored by PLDT Accenture, MVP, Loreal, UBS Delloite and DENR. They accomplished a project in terms of wildlings and seed planting of fruit bearing trees in a 25 hectare land area. In the said project, they planted trees such as Narra, Cupang, Mahogany, Kakawate, Rambutan, Caimito, Coconut, Banana, Jackfruit and 50,000 coffee seedlings.

You will be mesmerized by the scenic views on summit of Mt. Ayaas. It’s so high that you will realized how small the Mt. Binacayan and Mt. Pamitinan is. You will see this beautiful rice field made by the locals, we’re facing at the back part of the mountain. This bamboo made structure is not yet finished so get ready to feel the heat of the sunlight. You can take a nap here after the long hours of trekking before you descend. From this vantage point, you will able to see the smoky city of Manila, the urban area of Rodriguez and the mountainous area of the remaining part of Rizal.
